K. Raghunandan wins silver in the U-12 category at the World Youth Chess Championships 2013

K Raghunandan Srihari won the silver medal for India at the World Youth Chess Championships held in UAE. He finished as the first runner up in the Under 12 age category. He won 8.5 points out of the 11 available. He was participating in the Open category. India won the highest tally of medals at the Championships. 8 medals were won in the Standard games and 13 medals were won in the Blitz games.

 

N. Srinath wins International Rating Chess Tournament

Narayanan Srinath won at the International Rating Chess Tournament held in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. He won 9 out of 10 games in the tournament. He defeated the likes of Sriram Jha and Dinesh Sharma on his way to the title.

 

PYC Hindu Gymkhana starts Chess, Carom and Darts Centres

PYC Hindu Gymkhana added to its exquisite list of Sports Facility Centres by starting Chess, Carom and Darts Centres. These centres were inaugurated on Monday 7th October 2013 at 6.30pm by Mr. Aniruddha Deshpande, President of Pune District Chess Circle, President of Pune District Metropolitan Badminton Association, a huge Sports Enthusiast and an Entrepreneur, and Mr. Vijay Bhave, President PYC Hindu Gymkhana. The ribbon was untied by these dignitaries to flag off the centres.

WGM Soumya Swaminathan bags Silver in Commonwealth Chess Championship 2013

WGM Soumya Swaminathan won the Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Chess Championship held from 6th July to 14th July 2013 in South Africa. She scored an impressive 8.5 out of a possible 11 points. She was awarded the Silver Medal by former World Champion GM Gary Kasparov and Mr. Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa.

The Indian Oil Corporation player gained a massive 17 points in her FIDE Rating with a strong performance of 2344. The Lakshya & FLAME backed Soumya was impressive from the very first round helping her to bag the Silver Medal.

 

IM Shardul Gagare achieves his First GM Norm at the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2013

IIM Shardul Gagare achieved his First Grand Master Norm at the Commonwealth Chess Championship held from 6th July to 14th July 2013 in South Africa. He scored an impressive 6.5 out of a possible 9 points. The PRAJ Sponsored player gained 24 points in his FIDE Rating with a strong performance of 2605. The tournament performance of 2605 helped him achieve his first GM Norm.

 

Narayanan Srinath Keeps Asian Junior Title

International Master Narayanan Srinath retained his Asian Junior title while J Saranya, finished runner-up in the Asian Junior girls' championship that concluded at Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates on today.

Soumya Swaminathan Won the Bronze Medal on Board 5.

 

In the last round of World Women Team Chess Championship yesterday India went down against China 1.5-2.5. on top board eesha (Lakshya) lost to Ju wenjin on top board in fighting game in catalan opening. Padmini Many Mary drew their games on board 2 and board 3. Soumya with white pieces had a huge advantage from the opening against current world Jr. Champion Guo Q. in french opening game soumya surprised her opponent with winawar variation, and soumya won a pawn in the middle game, in time pressure soumya mishandled the rook and 6 pawn Vs. Rook and 5 pawns endgame. and game ended in a draw after 49 moves.

 

India finished 5th with 9 match points.

 

Soumya Swaminthan Supported by IOC - Flame Lakshya won the bronze medal on Board 5 with 5/8 games. her performance rating was 2400. on Board 5 olega giriya from Russia won the gold and Melia salome from Georgia won silver.

 

Mary Ann Gomes of India won the bronze medal on board 4 with 6.5 points out of 9 games.

India holds Gerogria, Eesha upsets top rated GM Nana

 

Today india created a upset by holding 2nd seed Georgia to a creditable draw. IM Eesha Karavde (Lakshya) created a major upset of the day by defeating highly rated GM Nana Dzagnidze of Georgia on top board. Eesha playing a captains knock played Queends Indian defence nana avoided a main line, and had a passive position from the opening, eesha maneuvered her pieces very nicely to force a attack on King side, nana resigned in a Hopeless position. Padmini lost on board 2 and Mary drew on board 3. making score 1.5-1.5 with soumya defending with black side against IM Nino Khurshidze on board 4. in english opening soumya misplayed in the middlegame, to find herself in a lost position but in the time scramble Nino missed mate in 2, and game ended in draw in rook ending.

WGM Eesha Karavade draw her 3rd round game against Highly rated Foisor from Romania with black pieces in Catalan opening, Eesha played a steady game and never gave any chances to the opponent. both players agreed for a draw in opposite color bishop endgame. After nisha's loss on board 2, WGM Soumya Swaminathan from Pune came up with a spirited win to help india draw the match against romania 2-2. Soumya defeated WGM Lami Alina ELO 2353 in a tactical game. Soumya sacrified a piece in the opening in sicilian Najdorf variation Alina gave the piece back, and reached a pawn -up position, but found her king very unsafe. Soumya used the opportunity to launch an attack and alina resigned after 29 moves.

Akshayraj Kore became the latest Indian chess player to achieve the Grandmaster title after he came up with a career-best rating performance to win the 'A' category of Cannes Festival that concluded in the French city famous for its film carnival.

Vidit Became 3rd Grandmaster of Maharashtra.

Vidit Gujrathi 18 from Nasik drew his 9th round game today to secure his final Grandmaster norm. He became the 3rd player from maharshtra to achieve this after GM pravin Thipsay in 1996, and GM Abhijit Kunte in 2000, Vidit is training with the academy for last 3 years and currently is supported by ONGC and Lakshya Foundation. Vidit was also awarded with laptop computer by Dr. Nitin Kareer and Shir Ashok Jain.

 

Shardul Gagre becomes International Master

Academy student Shardul today gave a double delight after vidit to complete his final IM norm in Kolkata today. He drew his final round game against Akshat Chandra from USA. Shardul 16 year old boy from rahuri is training in the academy for last 2 years. His sister Shalmali is also a Women international Master is studying MBBS is nasik. Shardul was awarded with Laptop Computer by Dr. Nitin Kareer.
