Women Grand Master Soumya Swaminathan played chess simultaneously with 6 boys and 6 girls, aged 12, of Janana Prabodhini Prashala. The event was organized by Kunte's Institute of Chess Excellence and Jnana Prabodhini Prashala. Mr. Rajabhau Shirgaonkar, President of Nutan Buddhibal Mandal, Sangli, Prof Milind Naik, Principal of Jnana Prabodhini Prashala and GM Abhijit Kunte were the Chief Guests for the event.

 
 

The dignitaries, Gm Abhijit Kunte, Mr. Rajabhau Shirgaonkar and Prof Milind Naik along with WGM Soumya Swaminathan on the dias.


The 12 children were selected out of the class of 40 boys and 40 girls for this simul. The simul lasted for around an hour as the children proved to be not-so-easy opponents for WGM Soumya. The excitement and the buzz amongst rest of the children was evident as their classmates put up a tough fight.

After the simul, WGM Soumya said that she never expected the children to be so good. She praised all the children, especially, Mihir Pendharkar who she thought was the best amongst the 12 children. WGM Soumya then congratulated every player and wished them keep up this good work. She also appreciated the efforts of Jnana Prabodhini Prashala towards helping the children learn chess.

The event ended with all the children crowding WGM Soumya Swaminathan and GM Abhijit Kunte for their autographs. Jnana Prabodhini Prashala thanked Kunte's Institute of Chess Excellence for organizing such an inspiring event.

Kunte's Institute of Chess Excellence (KICE), headed by GM Abhijit Kunte, has been running a program of "Chess in School" in Jnana Prabodhini Prashala since June 2012. KICE has provided Jnana Prabodhini with a coach, Abhishek Kelkar, and a chess syllabus which is being taught in the school as part of the curriculum. KICE aim to identify, nurture and develop young and budding chess talents, so that many more "Chess Champions" will be produced.
